EMV L2 Certification Engineer
Description
ROLE PURPOSE
Work as a hands-on EMV Level 2 (L2) certification engineer, responsible for testing and validating the payment kernel software inside POS and payment devices. The role involves working at the kernel level — where the device's software processes chip and contactless card transactions — using FIME's Eval+ tool to run certification test suites and support EMVCo approval activities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform EMV Level 2 certification testing on payment terminals and POS devices
- Work at the EMV kernel level — the software layer that handles chip and contactless card transactions
- Execute certification test suites using FIME Eval+ tool (both contact and contactless)
- Analyse and debug low-level card-terminal communication:
- APDU commands — the messages exchanged between the card and the terminal
- TLV data — the structured format in which EMV data is encoded and transmitted
- Support EMVCo certification activities — test execution, defect reporting, retesting
- Work closely with device development and certification teams to resolve kernel-level issues
- Document test results, defect findings, and certification status
MANDATORY SKILLS
- Hands-on experience performing EMV L2 certification testing — not L3, not support, not observation
- Practical experience using FIME Eval+ tool for L2 kernel test execution
- Strong understanding of EMV transaction flow — from card insertion/tap through to authorisation
- Ability to read and interpret APDU command sequences and TLV-encoded data
- Understanding of both contact and contactless card-terminal interaction
- Experience working with POS or payment terminal devices in a certification context
GOOD TO HAVE
- Familiarity with payment scheme specifications — Visa, Mastercard, Amex contactless kernels
- Experience with ICS (Implementation Conformance Statement) form preparation
- Exposure to BTT (Brand Test Tool)
- Knowledge of EMVCo TTA (Terminal Type Approval) process
